Zombie Trivia – A zombie is usually a reanimated corpse that has come back to life, or a human being controlled by someone else through magic. Zombies first originated from the West African belief of voodoo, which was exported to Haiti through the slave trade. From slow moving creatures, modern zombies were given a burst of speed through George A Romero‘s 1968 movie, Night of the Living Dead, which effectively started the whole modern genre of zombies as fast, speedy undead creatures who hunger for human flesh and brains.
Generally, zombies are the re-animated corpses of dead people or animals. Unlike vampires who don’t decay and still look as good as they did when alive (or even better), zombies decay. That’s why they look so scary!
Another difference between vampires and zombies is where they originate from. Vampires traditionally originated from the East European Slavic region. However, zombies traditionally came from the Caribbean, from the legends and folk tales of Voodoo religion. To create a zombie, evil witch doctors would reanimate corpses as their slaves.
Hollywood has always shown zombies in 2 ways. The usual traditional zombie is a slow-moving, shambling type of zombie. They’re slow but once they get into a crowd and close in, you can’t escape. The more recent type of zombies tends to be the super-fast, rabid virus infected type of zombie, as depicted in movies like George Romero’s Land of the Dead, I Am Legend, Resident Evil and other similar types of zombie movies. These undead creatures are super-fast and strong too. Very dangerous, and if you believe Hollywood, extremely difficult to kill. The best way is to simply escape and don’t even try to fight them off.
Zombies originally came from Haitian culture and belief. They believed that witch doctors or sorcerors called bokor would reanimate dead people as zombies and use them as their slaves. Unlike the Hollywood zombies, these Haitian zombies were mindless slaves and dangerous at all. However, if these zombies were given salt, they would regain their senses and could attack their masters or try to escape. Western scientists studying this phenomenon discovered that the bokor would usually give the zombies a powdered concoction which contained powerful poisons which could potentially paralyze a human being. This could actually provide a scientific basis to the legend of the zombie.
The best way to survive a zombie invasion is to try disguising yourself with zombie face paint, kids zombie costume, or a Zombie Doctor Costume or zombie halloween costumes. However, perhaps the best way is to first get a zombie hunter costume!
